Questar III School Library System is partnering with Mr. Howard Moody to offer two interactive workshop experiences. Howard Moody is the author of "The Heart of Play”, and is an experienced leader of play workshops for educators, parents, counselors, and others looking to bring more play and connection into children's lives.

Part 2 - Improv theater: Skills for life. Some of the most important tools a young person can learn are how to be creative, be a good problem solver, be socially and emotionally responsible and be an effective communicator. These are skills that are a part of any improvisational theater performers' tool kit. These skills can be taught through simple, easy to learn, improv theater games; games and activities that embody how to support your partner and make them look good, trust your creativity and intuition and say yes to all possibilities. Another important skill of good improv is being a good storyteller. Storytelling is an integral part of the library experience. In this workshop we will also explore the key components of creative storytelling, being a good communicator and saying yes to life and have lots of fun and laughter along the way.

The amended Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) took effect on July 1, 2013, under this amended legislation beginning January 1, 2014, all persons applying to the NYS Education Department for an administrative or supervisory service, classroom teaching service or school service certificate or coaching license must complete six (6) hours of coursework or training in harassment, bullying and discrimination prevention and intervention. The training proactively addresses the social patterns of harassment, bullying and discrimination and is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to create an affirming school environment for all students. Participants must complete all of the required coursework at a satisfactory level in order to receive credit for course completion. The due date for this coursework is May 31, 2024. Payment of $80.00 must be received before a participant is marked as COMPLETED. Our Questar III Health and Safety Office will be hosting a one-day workshop for school threat assessment teams on the Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (CSTAG) model (Dr. Dewey Cornell, University of Virginia) for conducting threat assessments in schools. The session will be held on Thursday, October 24, from 830am-330pm at our Central Office Conference Center. Members of the CSTAG team will present the Guidelines for Responding to Student Threats of Violence. These guidelines allow school-based teams to evaluate student threats of violence, quickly resolve less serious transient threats and take appropriate action in response to more serious, substantive threats. We recommend school threat assessment teams attend together as case studies will be presented and walked through as part of the workshop. The one-day training will include:

•Rationale for threat assessment,

•Misconceptions about the nature and scope of school violence,

•Ineffective responses to school violence - zero tolerance discipline and excessive security measures,

•How to conduct a threat assessment,

•How to identify and resolve transient threats, and

•How to identify and resolve substantive threats. One training manual per district will be provided for each team. Lunch will also be provided. Total Cost for each attendee is $175.
