TALE is a NYSED initiative which applies lessons learned from emergency remote teaching (ERT) in New York State. It outlines the core components necessary in excellent teaching, regardless of the learning environment, and invites educators to rethink teaching and learning across multiple learning environments (remote, in-person, hybrid.) The resources shared in this training were created by NYSED and are freely available to all NYS educators. More Information: Research has shown that librarians and library services play a significant role in the literacy development of young people. Through their expertise and the use of inclusive, high-quality library resources, school librarians positively influence the implementation and success of evidence-based literacy instruction, as defined by NYSED's Literacy Briefs and current research about literacy and libraries. Evidence shows that the practice of "wide reading” can foster the development of positive social behaviors and attitudes, including empathy. Wide reading also remains one of the most accessible ways for young people to build background knowledge and support the development other critical elements of language comprehension. Keynote speaker Donalyn Miller will share research evidence, instructional strategies, resources, and programming ideas for promoting wide reading practices. ENVoY (The capital letters stand for Educational Non-Verbal Yardsticks) is a classroom management program that cuts office referrals in half, reduces the request for Special Education testing, and increases teacher retention and satisfaction.

For people unfamiliar with ENVoY, please look at YouTube, "Michael Grinder School House of Relationships." This two-part mentorship program will bring together a community of North Country music teachers.

PART 1: Mentors and mentees will collaboratively work on a monthly topic 1-hour per month for five (5) months.

PART 2: There will be monthly ZOOM sessions with a guest clinician who will provide resources and expertise on the monthly topic. Questions pertaining to the topic will be discussed.

The program will kick-off in November with an introduction meeting. During November, the manager will match up partners, individuals will be notified by email with the partnership information. Work will continue through April, with conclusion activities taking place in May.

Themes include: recruitment and student retention, classroom management, strategies to run rehearsals, how to speak with your administration, curriculum development, programming for concerts/musicals, and leadership and where you career may take you.

This professional learning community is for non-tenured English teachers who teach grades 7-12. While there are clear NY state standards, what to teach and how to teach the material can feel overwhelming when an individual is new to the classroom.

This community will meet three times over the course of the academic year. The minimum number of participants per seminar is three.

Each seminar will be structured as a workshop atmosphere where teachers bring their own texts and creative ideas to share with the group. Through collaboration, the team can create short units and lesson plans that are enriching and engaging to students. The goal is to come with an idea or a lesson plan, but to walk away with many ideas and lesson plans that are ready to incorporate into the classroom!

The seminar will be led by a veteran ELA teacher ("curriculum coach") who will facilitate selecting the seminar topic and then assisting the group with lesson planning and meaningful collaboration. We will create a network of support for our non-tenured teachers as they collaborate and create in a supportive environment.

Each day will have an agreed upon theme or unit by the members. Some examples of seminar topics could include: How do I teach a poetry unit to my 9th graders?, What are some great short stories to teach with 7th graders and what creative activities might I do to align with the standards?, How does everyone else teach persuasive writing to their 10th graders?, Is anyone teaching grammar anymore?, For the people who all teach the novel TITLE, could we share our resources and chapter activities? What is a meaningful culminating project?

This workshop is for teachers in grades 7-12 who want to pilot a new approach to student-centered learning within a unit they are already teaching. This is a great stepping-stone for teachers as we continue to align with the "Portrait of a Graduate.”
During our day together, the presenter will introduce the elements of problem-based learning. Then, the teachers will work individually or collaboratively to incorporate PBL into a pre-existing unit. Let's get students more actively engaged!

Teachers can be from any content area. This is a one-day workshop.

Example: In a unit on persuasion, identify a problem you see in our school or community and create a solution that you can actually enact. The goal is for the project to be authentic with an actual audience, so the students' become activists. Learning to code can be hard and setting up a coding course even more so! Carnegie Mellon's Computer Science Academy makes learning to code and teaching coding easy! This curriculum is already being implemented in some of our area schools and students are having great success.

Get ready to meet the New York State Computer Science & Digital Fluency Standards for computational thinking through teaching your students Python. The basics of this course will teach you as an instructor how to draw images, create animations, and make simple games. You will be introduced to a self-paced, online curriculum that can be used on any device that leads to certification in Carnegie Mellon University's Computer Science Academy. With this certification, you will be given access to a complete curriculum to use with students including a defined scope and sequence, an online IDE (integrated development environment) for students to program in, and a portal to monitor student progress.

This workshop will introduce participants to the curriculum and start the professionals on their path towards CSO certification. To receive certification, teachers will need to complete 4 units in Computer Science Academy CSO by the end of the academic year. While one unit may be completed during this in-person day, participants will need to work on their own time to complete the rest of the units as supported by our helpdesk of certified trainers.

We invite you to join us in person for a special two-day event featuring Sara Daniel, focused on deepening knowledge around trauma-informed practices. Over the course of this event, DTST members will build on insights from the past three years to refine their action plans and update their fidelity tools on Day 3, which will include providing an overall assessment and identifying key areas for next year's focus. The two-day session, held on July 21st and 22nd, will combine content development with district-specific work sessions on Day 3, July 23rd. All districts are welcome to participate! Registration takes place from 8:00-8:30. *Participants in attendance will need to bring acceptable documentation for identification purposes as BOCES will be paying your stipend. Proper identification is required on the day of the workshop for payment. For example, U.S. Passport/Passport Card/Driver's license/School ID card with photograph/Voter's registration card AND Original Birth Certificate/Social Security Account Number card if you have not previously completed this process within the 23-24 school year.
