4. The Anxious Generation Book Study

In The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. Haidt shows how the "play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the "phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this "great rewiring of childhood” has interfered with children's social and neurological development. This book study will be hosted in Google Classroom. Book is not provided.

The course will teach you how to apply the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE): Assess for risk of suicide or harm, listen nonjudgmentally, give reassurance and information, encourage appropriate professional help, and encourage self-help and other support strategies. This training will be divided into two 3-hour in-person sessions. The first session will be held on December 16, 2024, from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm, and the second session will be held on December 17, 2024, from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm. A short online (approx. 1 hour or less) portion must be completed before the first in-person session. Access to the online portion will be provided to you once you enroll. Both sessions will be held at the Gateway Center, 420 E. German St, Herkimer, NY, 2nd floor, Bridge Room. This registration is for Herkimer BOCES Staff and the 10 Component School District. 28. Helping Students at Risk For Suicide (HSAR) for Herkimer BOCES

The workshop was developed by collaborating with the NYSASP, SPCNY, and Alberti Center for Bullying Abuse Prevention. HSAR is designed to improve skills, processes, and protocol for helping students at risk for suicide through: This training will: 1. Equipping educators with tools, knowledge, and skills to assist students having thoughts of suicide or engaging in suicidal behavior. 2. It is understanding the value of pre-planning and standardized procedures for intervention. 3. Identifying the value of collaboration and shared decision-making between school mental health professionals, community providers, and the student and their family. 4. Reviewing documentation of suicide intervention. 5. Preparing to implement standardized procedures that reflect best-practice intervention. Registration is opened to School professionals, including psychologists, school counselors, social workers, school administrators who are involved in the helping process when a student may be at risk for suicide, and community mental health providers who work with and in schools. Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) provides essential training to identify, understand, and address the signs of mental health and substance use challenges among children and adolescents aged 12-18. Participants will learn to implement the MHFA Action Plan (ALGEE): Assess for the risk of suicide or harm, listen nonjudgmentally, offer reassurance and information, encourage appropriate professional support, and promote self-help and other supportive strategies. This training session, specifically for school nurses, is scheduled for March 14, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Prior to the first in-person meeting, a brief online component, lasting approximately one hour or less, must be completed. Access to the online portion will be granted upon enrollment. YMHFA will be conducted at the Gateway Center, located at 420 E. German St, Herkimer, NY, on the 2nd floor in the Bridge Room.
