Audience: Classroom Teachers, Reading teachers, Literacy Coaches and Administrators

    Dates: 1/16/2025

    Location: LS 3

We know, the science of reading is a large body of research that encompasses many aspects of reading. It is not a program, curriculum, nor something you can purchase. It's a collection of scientific research from a variety of fields-including cognitive psychology, education, and neuroscience.

On this day, Lauren Kolbeck will discuss the tenets of the science of reading. We will explore ways to build strategic fluent readers with an emphasis on word recognition and language comprehension. We will explore phonemic awareness, systematic phonics instruction, vocabulary, building background knowledge and fluency. You will leave this day with practical tips and strategies to infuse into your instruction immediately.

Through in depth discussion of personal experience in the current classroom/school population, educators will reflect on how dyslexia may already have influenced their teaching and the learning experience of students past or present.

    Participants will discover:
  • strategies for recognizing signs of dyslexia versus what is developmentally appropriate and "neurotypical” for learning to read
  • an understanding of why dyslexic students, or students with related or undiagnosed language based challenges, struggle to learn to read and how to explicitly and systematically teach to their strengths as learners
  • how to approach or look for effective intervention and remediation strategies with explicit instruction like a certified academic language therapist
  • the importance of the teacher understanding the multiple categories of pure consonant sounds and vowel sounds based on their features of articulation

This workshop will serve as a refresher for those trying to put the PEs, SEPs, DCIs, CCCs, and phenomenon-based learning into context as you work on a curriculum that is aligned with how students must learn for better retention and be prepared for how they will be assessed on the new Biology regents exam.

The focus of the workshop is for participants to continue to develop a deeper understanding of how Regents Biology must use a New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) based curriculum. Students are expected to learn science by engaging in the practices and skills of scientists and engineers. There is content to learn but they will be expected to apply that content to novel phenomena, scenarios, and problems. They will construct their own understandings and build capacity to demonstrate their knowledge in context with much less memorization of science facts.

The recent influx of immigrants with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE) has posed many challenges for educators on Long Island. Many of these students are fleeing war, crime, poverty, abuse, and displacement. Some are illiterate in their native language and/or have missed significant amounts of time in school. Fortunately, there are instructional strategies and social-emotional practices that can be utilized to meet the unique needs of this growing population.

In this session, we will discuss the following topics:
  • Improving students' English language proficiency and foundational literacy skills
  • Building on students' past experiences, grit, and perseverance to help them achieve success
  • Helping students transition from informal ways of thinking to completing academic tasks
  • Using technology to motivate students and leverage their skills
  • Keeping expectations high, while simultaneously providing differentiation and scaffolds
  • Teaching students how to successfully collaborate with others
  • Encouraging student competency and autonomy

In addition, participants will learn about MALP (Mutually Adaptive Learning Paradigm), developed by Dr. Andrea DeCapua and Dr. Helaine Marshall, researchers and authors.
