In The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. Haidt shows how the "play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the "phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s. He presents more than a dozen mechanisms by which this "great rewiring of childhood” has interfered with children's social and neurological development. This book study will be hosted in Google Classroom. Book is not provided.

13. CPI: Nonviolent Crisis Intervention for Non-Components

This workshop is designed for staff who require the INITIAL & Refresher CPI: Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, especially new employees. It is intended for staff directly involved in crisis situations and focuses on teaching de-escalation techniques and nonrestrictive interventions. The INITIAL training is delivered through blended learning, with half of the training conducted online and the other half in person. All staff who register for this workshop must first complete the online portion, for which a link will be provided. The online training will cover basic concepts of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training, including definitions, concepts, and activities. The second portion of the training, which also caters to those needing a Refresher, involves a 3-hour in-person session. During this session, we will discuss the application of the models and techniques learned and practice these skills in the classroom. Staff will learn and practice physical training for CPI intervention, including physical interventions, disengagement, and holding skills. It is important to note that for staff taking the INITIAL training, completing the online portion is a prerequisite for participation in the in-person session. The in-person portion of this workshop will take place on November 21, 2024, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am at the Progress Room in the Gateway Center, Herkimer BOCES Central Business Office, 420 East German Street, Herkimer, NY 13350. The course costs are $75.00 for the Initial training and $50 for Refreshers.

Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Thousands of Americans like you say "Yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor each year. As a QPR-trained Gatekeeper, you will learn to recognize the warning signs of suicide, know how to offer hope, and know how to get help and save a life. Who should take this training? Training for all new teachers who will administer the NYSSA in the spring of 2025. This will be facilitated training to walk new teachers through how to administer the NYSSA. Teachers should have a login for the DLM Kite website prior to attending this training. A portion of this training will require teachers to log into the Kite website and the DLM Moodle Training site. A Kite account is required in order to access both of these sites. This will be a zoom meeting. The link will be sent the afternoon before the training.
