Program: Curriculum and Instruction

Meeting Times: 8:30-3:30 with a one hour daily lunch and breaks

THIS IS A VIRTUAL TRAINING!!

Offered through the Rose Institute for Learning and Literacy, Orton-Gillingham is a structured, multisensory approach to literacy instruction developed in the early 20th century by Dr. Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham. Multisensory techniques are defined as using the pathways to the brain of seeing, saying, hearing, and kinesthetic (handwriting). This diagnostic and prescriptive approach combines remediation based on extensive research on children with language processing difficulties with an analysis of the structure of the English language. Skills are taught in order based on an understanding of how children naturally develop language. Rules and patterns of the language are emphasized to prepare teachers with knowledge of the structure of the English language to teach students to decode words on their own.

Classroom Educator Training introduces participants to the fundamental elements of an OG based approach characterized by explicit teaching of foundational literacy skills. The course includes an introduction to phonology and basic phonics, and focuses on instruction to promote fluency, vocabulary acquisition, and an understanding of the structure of the language. The content includes information on dyslexia and language-based learning disabilities, strategies for multisensory instruction, using assessment results for small/large group lessons, and planning an Orton-Gillingham lesson. The scientifically based methodology is explicit, interactive, diagnostic, multisensory, and integrated. The course is designed for general and special-education teachers, administrators, curriculum specialists, and speech and reading specialists, and is recommended for instructional assistants and tutors. P-3 tier 1 curriculum

Through discussion and writing, we will bring to life the documents, run away notices, that provide us a glimpse of the enslaved human beings who resisted, defied, flew away, and claimed for themselves a lifetime or mere precious moments of freedom. Large numbers of enslaved people took liberation into their own hands. We peer through a glass darkly, an opaque window that separates us from the enslaved by time and gaps in the historical record.

We will use our words, spoken and written, to illuminate the stories of the self-emancipated. We will approach writing using the technique of speculative non-fiction: taking the bits of...information from the historical record and fleshing them out with imagined details, thoughts, and feelings.

Program: Curriculum and Instruction

Dates: 5/1/2025 to 5/21/2025

Meeting Times: 8:30-3:30 with a one hour daily lunch and breaks

THIS IS A 5-day VIRTUAL TRAINING!! May 1, 7, 14, 15 and 21st.
